From July 10 through October 10, 2009, the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History displayed an exhibit titled “Earl Shaffer and the Appalachian Trail”. As a virtual exhibit, it is still available and viewable on-line at the following links:

An extensive archive of Earl Shaffer’s papers, along with Earl’s boots, slide photographs, and the journal from his historic 1948 hike were donated to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. His journal can be viewed on-line at the following link:

The Little Black Book.
On his groundbreaking 1948 hike of the Appalachian Trail, Earl Shaffer carried his famous "little black book" to jot down notes, ideas, and poems during his 2,000-mile long trek. Read a sample of his original trail notes below, and click here to access the fully scanned journal.

The Appalachian Trail Museum
The Earl Shaffer Foundation was an early financial contributor and donor of Earl’s personal items to the Appalachian Trail Museum at Pine Grove Furnace, Pennsylvania. The Museum’s Earl Shaffer Exhibit includes a primitive trail shelter built by Earl that was rescued and reassembled by the Museum’s volunteers.
In addition, Earl Shaffer was added to the A.T. Museum Hall of Fame in 2011 as part of the 2011 Charter Class. Below is a link to the description of Earl and his contribution to Appalachian Trail History:
